it's been almost 6 years teaching English for students and there are some lessons that I have learned.
Changing people is an extremely difficult process. There are many barriers that exist, such as a lack of student's motivation and efforts to learn English and teachers' teaching skills.
I used to think that students must have the essential elements for English learners, as I mentioned above, and tended to point my fingers at my students when I had difficulties seeing them not progress much compared to others.
However, as I can teach more, there are ultimately important qualities that teachers must have. It's not about students. It's about the teachers.
I came to the conclusion that improving students' academic achievement totally depends on how much love the teachers have for their students. Even if the teacher is inexperienced, if he or she is sincerely passionate about their students' transformation through their teaching, he or she can be a good teacher and truly change the pupils, whether they have been bad or good, regardless of their previous academic success.
Of course, every single student has different intelligence and talent, so it takes time to make progress, but with teachers' absolute trust in their students, they will progress and get better at their desired language, and with teachers' unlimited love, the students can speak English better. It's a matter of time; every individual shows different progress at different times.
Persistent love, respect, and unshakeable trust must be the foundations for transforming students into better learners. Without those bases, they won't change much, no matter how smart you are or how good your teaching skills are.
I have to remind myself of how much I care about my students because sometimes I don't have enough energy or love to give to them, so resting and recharging my energy occasionally is needed.
